The Thunder Dragon’s Kingdom
Swap routine travel for a transformative 9-day Himalayan journey through the Kingdom of Bhutan, the legendary "Land of the Thunder Dragon." Sheltered within the Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan remains one of the world's most guarded cultural sanctuaries—a kingdom prioritizing Gross National Happiness, environmental stewardship, and Buddhist heritage over modern commercialism.
This classic western and central circuit guides you through four distinct valleys: the bustling capital of Thimphu, the subtropical valleys of Punakha, the serene glacial bowl of Phobjikha (Gangtey), and the valley of Paro. Along the way, you will walk across suspension bridges draped in colorful prayer flags, receive blessings in centuries-old cliffside shrines, and discover traditional art, architecture, and spiritual rituals largely unchanged since medieval times.
The expedition culminates with an ascent to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest), where Guru Padmasambhava is believed to have flown on the back of a tigress in the 8th century. Accompanied by expert local cultural guides, comfortable private transfers, and handpicked boutique accommodations, this tour offers a complete immersion into the spiritual soul of Bhutan.

Itinerary
Follow our carefully planned The Thunder Dragon’s Kingdom itinerary, designed with proper acclimatization and comfortable trekking days throughout the journey.
Land at Paro International Airport, taking in dramatic views of the Paro Valley. Meet your private Bhutanese guide and driver, then embark on a picturesque drive along the Pa Chhu and Thimphu riverbanks. En route, stop at Simtokha Dzong (built in 1629), the nation’s oldest fortified fortress-monastery. Arrive in the capital city of Thimphu, check into your hotel, and enjoy an evening stroll around the vibrant clock tower square and craft bazaars.
Spend the day uncovering Thimphu's cultural landmarks. Visit the massive gilded Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point) overlooking the entire valley, followed by the revered National Memorial Chorten, where local elders circumambulate and spin prayer wheels. Explore the National Institute for Zorig Chusum (Traditional Painting School), the Folk Heritage Museum, and the Motithang Takin Preserve to observe Bhutan’s curious national animal. Conclude your day with a tour of the regal Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan's government and clergy
Depart Thimphu and climb toward Dochula Pass (3,100m). On clear days, the pass provides a 360-degree vista of the eastern snow-capped Himalayas alongside the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens. Descend through lush sub-tropical forests into the warm Punakha Valley. Take a leisurely walk through terraced rice fields to visit Chimi Lhakhang, the famed 15th-century "Temple of Fertility" founded by the Divine Madman (Lama Drukpa Kunley). In the afternoon, tour the majestic Punakha Dzong, strategically situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
Travel east through changing mountain ecosystems and rhododendron forests via Wangduephodrang. Ascend into the wide, pristine glacial trough of Phobjikha Valley, nestled beneath the Black Mountains. Phobjikha is renowned as the protected winter habitat of the rare and endangered black-necked cranes. Arrive in Gangtey, check into your valley lodge, and spend a relaxing evening soaking in the tranquil alpine landscapes.
Begin your morning with a visit to the historic Gangtey Goenpa, a magnificent 17th-century monastery commanding views over the entire valley. Embark on the gentle Gangtey Nature Trail, a scenic 2-hour walk that winds through flower meadows, pine forests, and traditional wooden farmsteads down to the valley floor. In the afternoon, tour the Crane Information Center to learn about the conservation efforts protecting the valley's seasonal avian residents, followed by tea with a local farming family.
Bid farewell to the high valleys of Gangtey and retrace the scenic highway westward to Punakha. Upon arrival, take an easy morning hike across the terraced hillside of the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a four-story temple built by the Queen Mother for world peace that offers splendid river valley panoramas. Walk across the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Bhutan before an evening of leisure at your Punakha hotel.
Enjoy a relaxing breakfast before driving back across Dochula Pass down to the historic valley of Paro. Check into your hotel and head out to explore Ta Dzong, a former 17th-century watchtower that now houses the National Museum of Bhutan, showcasing centuries of Bhutanese textiles, armor, and thangkas. Walk down the paved courtyard to visit Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong) and wander across the traditional cantilever wooden bridge over the river.
Rise early for the highlight of your journey: the pilgrimage hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest). The trail ascends through fragrant blue pine forests draped in Spanish moss, pausing at a mountainside teahouse for views of the monastery clinging to a 900-meter vertical cliff face. Continue upward across stone steps, past a roaring waterfall, and enter the sacred inner temples and caves. On the return to the valley, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest 7th-century shrines, and celebrate your final evening with an optional traditional hot stone herbal bath.
After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport (PBH) in time for your onward international flight, taking in final panoramic views of the Himalayas.
