A city where history is still alive

Rising sharply from the rugged canyons of western Nepal, the Dhaulagiri Region represents one of the most formidable, pristine, and remote frontiers in Himalayan mountaineering and wilderness trekking. Centered around the titanic massif of Dhaulagiri I—the seventh-highest summit on Earth at 8,167 meters—the region earns its name from Sanskrit, meaning "Dazzling White Mountain." Separated from the neighboring Annapurna Range by the world’s deepest gorge, the Kali Gandaki, Dhaulagiri stands in stark, dramatic isolation, defined by towering vertical relief, hanging glaciers, and knife-edge ridgelines that dwarf the human scale.

Unlike the heavily commercialized tea-house trails of central Nepal, the Dhaulagiri circuit leads adventurers through a classic expedition-style wilderness. Starting through the lush subtropical foothills of the Myagdi Khola, the trail meanders across terraced farmland and vibrant Magar and Gurung settlements like Muri and Boghara before leaving permanent human habitation behind. Ascending past dense pine and bamboo groves, the terrain shifts into an unyielding alpine world of moraine, rock, and ice. Trekkers traverse the glaciated riverbeds beneath the colossal West and North faces of Dhaulagiri, establishing high camps at Italian Base Camp and Dhaulagiri Base Camp (4,748m) surrounded by towering 7,000-meter sentinels like Tukche Peak and Dhaulagiri II, III, and V.

At Himalaya Safety Treks, we organize high-altitude Dhaulagiri expeditions with uncompromising logistical foresight and rigorous safety infrastructure. Navigating this region demands genuine mountaineering readiness, as the route ascends across two treacherous glaciated cols: French Pass (5,360m) and Dhampus Pass (5,244m), descending into the stark, wind-sculpted expanse of the fabled Hidden Valley. To provide comfort on one of the most physically demanding circuits in the Himalayas, we deploy complete mobile alpine expedition camps equipped with insulated sleeping shelters, heated mess tents, dedicated expedition chefs, and porter support teams that adhere to strict ethical standards.

Because the Dhaulagiri Circuit traverses glaciated moraines and remote terrain far from roadside infrastructure, wilderness safety is our highest priority. Every HSTN departure is directed by veteran Sherpa sirdars and certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR) guides. Our teams conduct twice-daily pulse-oximetry and medical screenings, carry emergency bottled oxygen along with Portable Altitude Chambers (PAC), and maintain continuous satellite dispatch links with Kathmandu for immediate helicopter search and rescue operations.

The trek concludes with a dramatic descent from the high snowline into the ancient apple orchards and white-washed Thakali stone alleys of Marpha in the Mustang rain shadow. For experienced adventurers seeking raw wilderness, pristine glaciers, and true solitude beneath an 8,000-meter giant, the Dhaulagiri Region with Himalaya Safety Treks delivers an unforgettable high-altitude journey anchored by premier expedition safety.

Location

Located in the Dhaulagiri Region

Located in western Nepal just west of the Annapurna Range and north of the Myagdi district headquarters of Beni, the Dhaulagiri Region spans the formidable Dhaulagiri massif. It is bounded on the east by the dramatic depths of the Kali Gandaki Gorge and on the north and west by the remote valleys of Dolpo and Mustang. Dominated by Dhaulagiri I (8,167m), the seventh-highest mountain in the world, the region transitions from subtropical river valleys along the Myagdi Khola to glaciated passes and high-altitude arctic terrain in the uninhabited Hidden Valley.
