Tent Peak (Tharpu Chuli) Climbing

The 14-Day Tent Peak (Tharpu Chuli) Climbing Expedition takes mountaineers into the inner sanctum of the Annapurna amphitheater. Rising to 5,663 meters (18,575 ft), Tharpu Chuli sits isolated in the middle of the glacial basin like a tent, surrounded by a 360-degree wall of giant peaks. The approach follows the classic Annapurna Sanctuary trail through the bamboo and rhododendron gorges of the Modi Khola to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m). Establishing a wilderness high camp at 4,900 meters across the South Annapurna Glacier moraine, the climb negotiates rock steps, a glaciated fluted ice wall, and a sharp knife-edge summit snow ridge overlooking the colossal south face of Annapurna I (8,091 m).

Itinerary

Follow our carefully planned Tent Peak (Tharpu Chuli) Climbing itinerary, designed with proper acclimatization and comfortable trekking days throughout the journey.

Depart Lakeside Pokhara by private vehicle along the scenic highway past Nayapul and Birethanti, driving along the Modi Khola dirt road to Matque. Meet your climbing Sherpa guide and porter team. Cross the suspension bridge and climb stone staircases through terraced farmlands past Jhinu Danda up to the Gurung gateway village of Chomrong, enjoying direct views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).

Day 1
Overnight: Day 1
Note:

Descend the stone steps of Chomrong to cross the suspension bridge over the Chomrong Khola. Climb up through terraced fields to Sinuwa, entering the protected Modi Khola gorge. Walk through dense, mossy cloud forests of bamboo, oak, and blooming rhododendron, passing the riverside clearing of Bamboo to check into your lodge in Dovan.

Day 2
Overnight: Day 2
Note:

Ascend past the historic Hinku Cave where the canyon walls narrow dramatically. Climb through the avalanche chutes past Deurali into the sub-alpine scrub. The steep gorge opens into the wide glacial gateway of Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m), providing views of Mount Fishtail, Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, and Annapurna III.

Day 3
Overnight: Day 3
Note:

A gentle, scenic morning walk along the lateral moraine of the South Annapurna Glacier into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary. Arrive at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m) surrounded by a 360-degree amphitheater of snow peaks including Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing.

Day 4
Overnight: Day 4
Note:

Descend onto the rubble and ice of the South Annapurna Glacier, traversing crevasses and boulder fields to cross to the western lateral moraine. Climb a steep rocky grass slope to pitch tents at Tharpu Chuli Base Camp (4,450 m). Settle into your mountain camp and prepare climbing hardware.

Day 5
Overnight: Day 5
Note:

Ascend steep rocky gullies, loose scree, and exposed rock ridges to establish Tent Peak High Camp (4,900 m) on a high glacial terrace. In the afternoon, your certified climbing Sherpa conducts mandatory technical training: practicing fixed-line ascents using mechanical jumars, crampon footwork on 50-degree hard snow, safety anchoring, and figure-eight rappelling.

Day 6
Overnight: Day 6
Note:

Wake at 1:30 AM under starlight for hot soup and gear up. Scramble across rock bands to Crampon Point. Put on crampons, rope up, and navigate crevassed glacial slopes to the northwest ridge. Climb the steep 50-degree fluted snow and ice wall using fixed lines and jumars, traversing an exposed knife-edge snow ridge to the summit of Tent Peak (5,663 m). Enjoy views across the entire Annapurna Sanctuary: Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Gangapurna, and Hiunchuli. Rappel down safely to High Camp for hot soup, pack up, and cross the glacier back to your teahouse in ABC.

Day 7
Overnight: Day 7
Note:

A dedicated contingency day built into the schedule to safeguard against high winds, heavy snow, or individual acclimatization adjustments. If the summit was achieved on Day 7, this day serves as a relaxed celebration and photography day at Annapurna Base Camp.

Day 8
Overnight: Day 8
Note:

Begin retracing your steps down the Modi Khola canyon in oxygen-rich air. Pass Machhapuchhre Base Camp, Deurali, and Dovan, dropping back below the tree line into the lush bamboo and rhododendron cloud forests to check into your lodge at Bamboo.

Day 9
Overnight: Day 9
Note:

Climb the forest trail out of the gorge to Sinuwa, drop down to cross the Chomrong Khola, and ascend the stone steps back into Chomrong for lunch.
