The 3-Day Lower Mustang & Muktinath Overland 4WD Tour is a compact mountain road trip venturing through the deepest gorge on Earth—the Kali Gandaki Canyon—into the rain-shadow desert of Lower Mustang. Departing from Lakeside Pokhara in a dedicated high-clearance 4WD vehicle, you ascend past subtropical waterfalls and deep river cliffs into a Tibetan-influenced landscape. You will explore the ancient fortified gateway village of Kagbeni (2,810 m), receive sacred blessings at the revered pilgrimage sanctuary of Muktinath (3,710 m), wander through the historic white-walled village of Marpha, and unwind in the natural riverside hot springs of Tatopani before returning to Pokhara.

Follow our carefully planned Lower Mustang & Muktinath Overland 4WD itinerary, designed with proper acclimatization and comfortable trekking days throughout the journey.
Meet your private 4WD driver and guide at your hotel in Pokhara early morning. Drive along the scenic highway past Kusma and Beni, entering the Kali Gandaki River canyon between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Pass the dramatic waterfalls of Rupse Chhahara and stop for lunch at Tatopani. Ascend through the windy valley floor past the apple capital of Jomsom to check into your deluxe heritage lodge in the ancient fortress village of Kagbeni (2,810 m). Explore narrow stone alleyways, clay stupas, and the 15th-century Kag Chode Thupten Sampheling Monastery in the afternoon.

Drive up the switchback road across the arid plateau to the sacred shrine of Muktinath (3,710 m). Walk or take a pony to the main temple complex to perform holy ablutions under the 108 stone bull-headed water spouts, visit the eternal flame at Jwala Mai, and offer prayers at the Vishnu shrine. Descend past the historic mud-brick cliff monastery of Jharkot, stopping in Jomsom for lunch. Continue down to the idyllic Thakali village of Marpha (2,670 m), known for its whitewashed stone alleys, organic apple orchards, and local cider distilleries.

Enjoy breakfast featuring fresh local apple preserves and bakery items in Marpha. Drive south along the Kali Gandaki canyon, stopping at Tatopani to soak in natural geothermal hot spring pools right beside the roaring river. Continue through Beni and Nayapul back to Pokhara, concluding a memorable 3-day overland journey across Lower Mustang.

Requires Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Entry Permit and TIMS Card. Maximum altitude reached is 3,710 m at Muktinath Temple. No intense trekking is required—all excursions are supported by private 4WD vehicle. Warm layers and windbreakers are recommended due to the strong afternoon trans-Himalayan valley winds.

Yes. This 3-day tour is carried out entirely in comfortable private 4WD vehicles. It avoids strenuous trekking while allowing families and seniors to visit Muktinath Temple, Kagbeni, and Marpha with minimal walking required.
The road is paved from Pokhara to Beni and mostly paved/blacktopped from Jomsom to Muktinath. The section between Beni and Jomsom (through the Kali Gandaki gorge) is a mix of gravel and paved mountain terrain, which our experienced 4WD drivers navigate smoothly.
Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) offer clear blue skies, comfortable temperatures, and panoramic views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Lower Mustang is also located in a rain-shadow zone, making summer/monsoon road travel feasible.
