Yala Peak Climbing with Langtang Valley

The 12-Day Yala Peak Climbing Expedition is the quintessential introductory mountaineering experience in the Himalayas. Located within Langtang National Park just north of Kathmandu, Yala Peak rises to 5,520 meters (18,110 ft) near the Tibetan border. The route ascends the Langtang River valley through subtropical forests and traditional Tamang villages into the high glacial amphitheater of Kyanjin Gompa (3,860 m). Establishing a wilderness high camp at 4,800 meters, the climb follows a non-technical glaciated snow slope and gentle ridge scramble to the summit, rewarding climbers with unobstructed views of Shishapangma (8,027 m—the world's 14th highest peak in Tibet), Langtang Lirung, Gangchempo, and Dorje Lakpa.

Itinerary

Follow our carefully planned Yala Peak Climbing with Langtang Valley itinerary, designed with proper acclimatization and comfortable trekking days throughout the journey.

Depart Kathmandu early morning by private 4WD vehicle along the scenic Pasang Lhamu Highway. Wind through the middle hills past Trishuli Bazaar and the district hub of Dhunche, entering Langtang National Park. Descend down into the valley floor along the Bhote Koshi riverbed to check into your lodge in the bustling trailhead town of Syabrubesi.

Day 1
Overnight: Day 1
Note:

Cross the suspension bridge over the Bhote Koshi and follow the rushing Langtang Khola eastward into the gorge. Ascend through dense subtropical forests of oak, bamboo, and rhododendron where red pandas and langur monkeys dwell. Pass small riverside tea stalls at Bamboo and Changtang to reach the forest clearing of Lama Hotel.

Day 2
Overnight: Day 2
Note:

Climb through hemlock and oak cloud forests, breaking out of the dense canopy at Ghora Tabela (3,030 m) where the valley opens dramatically. Pass the rebuilt settlement of Langtang Village, reflecting at the memorial wall dedicated to the 2015 earthquake victims. Continue across yak pastures and prayer walls to settle into your lodge in Mundu.

Day 3
Overnight: Day 3
Note:

A scenic morning walk following the widening U-shaped glacial valley floor. Pass ancient water mills, carved Buddhist Mani stones, and traditional yak pastures beneath the soaring icefall of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m). Arrive before noon in Kyanjin Gompa, visiting the historic monastery and the government-operated yak cheese factory.

Day 4
Overnight: Day 4
Note:

Spend an essential acclimatization day pushing your elevation ceiling. Hike up the switchback ridge to Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) or Tserko Ri (4,984 m) for a 360-degree panorama of Langtang Lirung, Kinshung, Yansa Tsenji, Gangchempo, and Dorje Lakpa before descending to Kyanjin Gompa to rest and hydrate.

Day 5
Overnight: Day 5
Note:

Branch north-east from Kyanjin Gompa, climbing out of the valley floor along the lateral moraine of the Yala Glacier. Ascend rocky alpine scrub and scree trails to pitch tents at Yala Peak Base Camp (4,600 m) or High Camp (4,800 m). In the afternoon, your climbing Sherpa conducts a brief equipment check and demonstration of crampons, harnesses, and walking techniques with an ice axe.

Day 6
Overnight: Day 6
Note:

Wake at 3:00 AM for hot porridge and gear up under headlamps. Scramble up rocky moraine slopes to Crampon Point. Put on crampons, rope up, and climb gentle 30-to-35-degree glaciated snow slopes leading to a short, easy rocky ridge scramble to the prayer-flag-adorned summit of Yala Peak (5,520 m). Enjoy views of Mount Shishapangma (8,027 m) in Tibet, Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, and Gangchempo. Descend safely to Base Camp for hot soup, pack up, and walk back down to the comfort of your lodge in Kyanjin Gompa.

Day 7
Overnight: Day 7
Note:

A dedicated contingency day built into the schedule to safeguard against high winds, snowstorms, or individual acclimatization adjustments. If the summit was achieved on Day 7, this serves as a relaxed exploration day in Kyanjin Gompa visiting the Langshisha Kharka viewpoint.

Day 8
Overnight: Day 8
Note:

Begin retracing your route down the Langtang Valley in oxygen-rich air. Descend past Mundu, Langtang Village, and Ghora Tabela, dropping back into the lush rhododendron and oak cloud forests to check into your lodge at Lama Hotel.

Day 9
