The Upper Mustang Motorbike Adventure Tour is an iconic trans-Himalayan overland expedition, taking riders through dramatic river valleys, rugged cliff sides, and into the arid Tibetan plateau. Riding classic mountain-ready machines like the Royal Enfield Himalayan, this tour crosses from the subtropical valleys of Pokhara into the world’s deepest river trench—the Kali Gandaki Gorge—flanked by the 8,000-meter giants Dhaulagiri and Annapurna I.

Beyond the checkpoint town of Kagbeni, riders enter the restricted kingdom of Upper Mustang, an untouched cultural enclave that remained closed to foreigners until 1992. The landscape shifts into sculpted wind-eroded rock formations, deep ravines, and high-altitude desert plateaus. Navigating dirt tracks, gravel ascents, and riverbeds across passes exceeding 3,800 meters, the route leads to the ancient walled capital of Lo Manthang. Inside the mud-brick fortifications, riders explore 14th-century gompas, historic palaces, and the multi-story sky caves of Chhoser carved into vertical cliffs.

The return journey heads south via the sacred pilgrimage sanctuary of Muktinath (3,800m) and the cobblestone apple-orchard village of Marpha. After unwinding weary muscles in the natural riverside hot springs of Tatopani, riders trace the highway back into the serene lakeside atmosphere of Pokhara. Supported throughout by an expert motorcycle road captain, backup mechanic, and 4WD gear-support jeep, this journey provides a seamless blend of off-road adventure, ancient Tibetan culture, and mountain scenery.

Follow our carefully planned Upper Mustang Motorbike Adventure Tour itinerary, designed with proper acclimatization and comfortable trekking days throughout the journey.

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, a representative from Himalaya Safety Treks will greet you at the arrival terminal and transfer you to your hotel by private vehicle. After checking in, take time to settle in and recover from your flight.

In the late afternoon, we assemble for a comprehensive expedition briefing covering the riding routes, high-altitude terrain, safety protocols, and gear checks. We will review your documentation, verify your driving permits, and introduce your road captain and support crew. The evening concludes with a welcome dinner featuring authentic Nepali cuisine.

After breakfast, our team finalizes your Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permits and the official Restricted Area Permits (RAP) required for Upper Mustang. During the morning, you will receive your Royal Enfield Himalayan adventure motorcycle. We embark on a test ride along the valley outskirts to let you get familiar with the bike's throttle, clutch response, and handling on both tarmac and broken ground. Along the way, we visit key cultural landmarks, make final mechanical adjustments to your bike, and finish last-minute gear preparations.

We start our engines early to beat the valley traffic and ride west along the Prithvi Highway. The route winds down the lush Trishuli River gorge, offering wide highway curves, active river valleys, and mountain roadside settlements. Following the course of the Marsyangdi River, we continue through terraced farmlands and market towns before ascending into the scenic Pokhara valley rim. Upon reaching Pokhara, we check into our Lakeside hotel, park the bikes, and enjoy an evening stroll along the peaceful shores of Phewa Lake beneath the Annapurna range.

Leaving Pokhara behind, we ride west toward Beni, the gateway to the remote Myagdi and Mustang districts. The smooth asphalt gradually gives way to rugged gravel and dirt tracks as we enter the Kali Gandaki River canyon. The ride takes us through subtropical riverbanks, past crashing roadside waterfalls, and across suspension bridges flanked by sheer cliff walls. By mid-afternoon, we arrive at the village of Tatopani. After parking the motorcycles, you can relax your riding muscles in the natural riverside hot sulfur springs.

Today's ride takes us deep into the world's deepest gorge, carved between the two 8,000-meter giants Dhaulagiri and Annapurna I. We tackle rocky riverbeds, dry stream crossings, and steep cliffside dirt trails heading north. Passing through the whitewashed Thakali village of Marpha, famous for its cobblestone alleys and apple orchards, we reach the regional hub of Jomsom. The afternoon wind picks up as we ride across the open gravel plains of the Kali Gandaki valley floor to Kagbeni, the historic medieval gateway and official border checkpoint into Upper Mustang.

After our Restricted Area Permits are inspected and stamped at the Kagbeni police checkpoint, we officially enter the forbidden kingdom of Upper Mustang. The road transitions into rugged off-road singletracks, steep switchbacks, and wind-carved desert canyons. We cross the Kali Gandaki over an iron bridge and ascend a steep cliff face to Chele village. Riding across high mountain ridges, we negotiate the Taklam La and Syangboche passes above 3,600 meters, taking in dramatic views of multi-colored rock strata and distant snowy peaks before descending to the village of Ghami.

The morning begins with a ride past Upper Mustang’s longest ancient Mani wall, lined with sacred Buddhist stone carvings. We ascend toward the village of Charang, known for its red-walled monastery and historic hilltop fortress palace. Continuing over dry desert plateaus and winding gravel switchbacks, we reach the Lo La Pass (3,850 m). From this vantage point, we catch our first view of the walled capital of Lo Manthang resting against the Tibetan border landscape. A short downhill ride brings us directly to the fortress gates of the ancient city.

We dedicate today to exploring the wonders around Lo Manthang without heavy luggage. We ride north toward the village of Chhoser, winding along open desert riverbeds and sandstone bluffs. Here, we explore the multi-story Shija Jhong Caves, an architectural wonder of cliff dwellings carved high into sheer canyon walls over 2,500 years ago. We also visit the cliffside Nyphu Gompa and ride toward the high-altitude plateau near the Tibetan border before returning to Lo Manthang in the afternoon to wander through its monasteries and narrow alleys.

We bid farewell to the walled capital and begin our southward descent across the high desert. Retracing our path through high ridgelines and dry canyons, we enjoy different angles of the Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri mountain peaks. After clearing the Kagbeni checkpoint, we branch east and climb the steep, paved switchbacks up to the sacred valley of Muktinath. In the afternoon, we visit the historic Muktinath Temple, a revered pilgrimage destination for both Hindus and Buddhists featuring 108 stone water spouts and an eternal natural gas flame.

The day begins with clear mountain views over Mount Dhaulagiri before we fire up the bikes and descend the winding road into Jomsom. Following the Kali Gandaki downstream, we ride across rocky riverbeds and loose gravel stretches, dropping rapidly in elevation. As we ride further south, the arid desert plateau transitions back into pine forests, rushing waterfalls, and lush subtropical hillsides. By late afternoon, we reach Tatopani, where we can soak once more in the warm thermal springs and celebrate completing the challenging off-road sections.

We ride the final stretch of broken river road from Tatopani down to the district town of Beni. From Beni, the route joins the smooth, paved highway heading toward Pokhara. Riding through terraced hills, small towns, and mountain vistas, we arrive back in Pokhara by early afternoon. We hand over the motorcycles for an end-of-tour inspection, check into our Lakeside hotel, and enjoy a well-deserved hot shower. The evening is open for celebrating the completed journey with dinner and drinks along Lakeside.

Note:

After breakfast at your hotel, we arrange your scenic return to Kathmandu, either via a 25-minute domestic mountain flight or a private highway vehicle transfer along the river corridor. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will have free time for last-minute souvenir shopping or relaxing in the Thamel market area. At the designated hour, our private vehicle transfers you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your international flight home, concluding the Upper Mustang Motorbike Adventure Tour.
